InDesign: Introduction

Objective:

The student will learn how to do the following:
• Open documents.
• Select and use tools.
• View information in the Properties panel.
• Use the Application bar and Control panel.
• Manage document windows.
• Work with panels.
• Customize the workspace.
• Change the magnification of a document.
• Navigate through a document.
• Use context menus and panel menus.
• Change Interface preferences.

Method:

This lesson will take one class period to complete. To get the lesson files used in this chapter, download them from the Google Drive. For the text book, you will download from Canvas.

Text Effects in Illustrator

Objective:
This is an introduction to applying effects to text.

Method:
Use the following Link to search for THREE tutorials on Text effects. The goal is to gain an understanding of how to apply different effects to text.
Use YOUR NAME (first only) in place of the word in the tutorial.

You will choose THREE different text effects to complete.

**Do not download the font** Use a similar one that is already installed instead.

Turn In:
Export your final images as a PNG and post to your blog and discuss what tools were used and what struggles you had to overcome to achieve the finished piece.

Gradient Meshes: Lily Pad

Objective:
Expand your skills with gradient meshes and blends.

Method:
Use this tutorial to create several floating lily pads with flowers.

Turn In:
When finished, make sure to save as both an .ai and a .png file. Post your .png file to your blog and discuss the tools used in the project and what you thought about the project as a whole.

Gradients and Blending Effects-Jellyfish

Objective:
Deepen knowledge and skills within Adobe Illustrator

Method:
Use this tutorial to learn about gradients and blending mode effects in order to create a glowing jelly fish. You will also learn how to create new brushes and use the Scatter brush tool.

NOTE: This is a challenging assignment. It is going to test your problem solving skills.

Turn In:
When you finish, make sure to save both an .ai and .png file. You will submit your .png file to your blog. Discuss both your favorite and least favorite parts of the project and explain why.

More Simple Shapes-Yeti

Objective:
Reaffirm previous knowledge of basic shape tools and learn other modification techniques with the Pathfinder panel.

Method:
Use this tutorial to create a “Not so scary” Yeti. The look must be the same, but feel free to play with the colors.

Turn in:
Save the finished design in your illustrator folder as both an .AI and a .PNG file. The .png file needs to be posted to your blog. Describe the techniques that you used. What was your favorite part of the tutorial? What did you struggle with most and how did you overcome it?

Simple Shapes-Basketball Playa

Objective:
Learning to use the basic shape tools as well as other time saving tools like the Shapebuilder tool.

Method:
Use this tutorial to create a basketball player in your own likeness. You can be creative with your color choices.

Turn in:
Once you finish, save both an uncompressed .AI and a compressed .PNG file into your Illustrator folder and post the .PNG file to your blog with an explanation of the project steps, what tools you used, and what issues you had to overcome.

AI: Squirrel & Nut Log (At Home Learners)

Objective:

The student will be introduced to some key fundamentals for working in the application. The fundamentals include:

  1. Creating, editing, and saving a New Document
  2. Drawing shapes using the shape tools (Rectangle, Ellipse, etc..)
  3. Editing shapes using the selection and direction selection tool
  4. Applying and editing color using’s Fill color tools, and swatches panel.
  5. Applying and editing stroke size and colors to an object
  6. Working within layers, isolating layers
  7. Working and editing Type font, size, and color
  8. Creating shapes using the Shape Builder tool
  9. Creating shapes using the Curvature tool
  10. Transforming objects using Selection tool, Direct selection tool, Eraser tool, and Shape Builder tool
  11. Working with symbols
  12. Creating and Editing Gradients
  13. Placing and transforming an image using image trace
  14. Applying, editing, and using the paint brush
  15. Applying alignments to artwork
  16. Working with stylizing effects like drop shadow.

Method:

Using the Adobe Illustrator CIB: Squirrel & Nut instructions and assets that is available in Canvas. The student will complete the Squirrel & Nut logo that is pictured above.

Then the student will Export the logo as a .png file and post it to their blog with a 4-6 sentence summary detailing their learned outcomes.
