InDesign: Introduction

Objective:

The student will learn how to do the following:
• Open documents.
• Select and use tools.
• View information in the Properties panel.
• Use the Application bar and Control panel.
• Manage document windows.
• Work with panels.
• Customize the workspace.
• Change the magnification of a document.
• Navigate through a document.
• Use context menus and panel menus.
• Change Interface preferences.

Method:

This lesson will take one class period to complete. To get the lesson files used in this chapter, download them from the Google Drive. For the text book, you will download from Canvas.

Introduction to Character Animator

Objective:

The student will follow tutorials about Adobe Character Animator. This the application software lets you animate characters with your voice and a webcam.

Students will then create their own character and create a mini skit that illustrates the following:

  1. Creation of own character *you may create your own puppet from scratch or you can use a previously made puppet to start. However, the puppet must be edited, changed, re-mastered, etc… to be your work.*
  2. Use of visemes synced up with your voice recording.
  3. Use of the following rigging tools: Handle, Stick, Pin, Dragger, and Dangles
  4. Use of puppet behaviors to create facial expressions and movements: Eyebrows, Pupils, Blink, arms, legs, Walking,
  5. Use of physics to control gravity and create a more realistic cartoon.
  6. Use of Triggers to help bring character to life.
  7. Background scene or scenes
  8. Bumper music, sound effects, incidental music

Method:

Students will access Youtube and subscribe to Okay Samurai channel.

In the section titled Character Animator Beginner Lessons you will start with the first video and follow the tutorials.

At the end of EACH tutorial video, you will post to your blog a summary of the video and your progress on your own character.

Text Effects in Illustrator

Objective:
This is an introduction to applying effects to text.

Method:
Use the following Link to search for THREE tutorials on Text effects. The goal is to gain an understanding of how to apply different effects to text.
Use YOUR NAME (first only) in place of the word in the tutorial.

You will choose THREE different text effects to complete.

**Do not download the font** Use a similar one that is already installed instead.

Turn In:
Export your final images as a PNG and post to your blog and discuss what tools were used and what struggles you had to overcome to achieve the finished piece.

MODELING A SIMPLE HUMAN CHARACTER

Objective:
work on becoming more familiar and comfortable with modeling tools in Maya

Method:
Follow the below tutorials to master the proper steps in modeling a basic humanoid character.The videos are in an older version of Maya, but most of the tools are the same. In video 3 you will use the bridge tool instead of the append tool to join the fingers to the rest of the hand.

Turn In:
Post daily progress snips to your blog as you work through the videos. Make sure to write brief descriptions for each post that contains which steps, techniques, and tools that you utilized that day.

Gradients and Blending Effects-Jellyfish

Objective:
Deepen knowledge and skills within Adobe Illustrator

Method:
Use this tutorial to learn about gradients and blending mode effects in order to create a glowing jelly fish. You will also learn how to create new brushes and use the Scatter brush tool.

NOTE: This is a challenging assignment. It is going to test your problem solving skills.

Turn In:
When you finish, make sure to save both an .ai and .png file. You will submit your .png file to your blog. Discuss both your favorite and least favorite parts of the project and explain why.

More Simple Shapes-Yeti

Objective:
Reaffirm previous knowledge of basic shape tools and learn other modification techniques with the Pathfinder panel.

Method:
Use this tutorial to create a “Not so scary” Yeti. The look must be the same, but feel free to play with the colors.

Turn in:
Save the finished design in your illustrator folder as both an .AI and a .PNG file. The .png file needs to be posted to your blog. Describe the techniques that you used. What was your favorite part of the tutorial? What did you struggle with most and how did you overcome it?

Animate CC: Animating Symbols

Objective:

In this lesson, the student will learn how to do the following:

• Animate the position, scale, and rotation of objects using motion tweening.
• Adjust the pacing and timing of your animation.
• Animate transparency and filters.
• Change the path of an object’s motion.
• Create nested animation.
• Split a motion tween.
• Change the easing of an object’s motion.
• Animate in 3D space.

Method:

Using the downloaded Adobe Animate CIB instructions that is available in Canvas. I have shared a folder in Google Drive that contains all of the assets needed for these assignments. The student will start of page 100 and complete the Lesson 3: Animating Symbols is pictured above.

Once completed, the student will export the file through Adobe Media Encoder as a h.264 video. Then, publish the video in YouTube, and paste the YouTube video link into your blog along with a 4-6 sentence summary of learning.

Animate CC: Creating Graphics and Text

Objective:

In this lesson, the student will learn how to do the following:
• Draw rectangles, ovals, and other shapes.
• Modify the shape, color, and size of drawn objects.
• Understand fill and stroke settings.
• Create and edit curves and variable-width strokes.
• Apply gradients and transparencies.
• Use Art and Pattern brushes for expressive drawing.
• Create, edit text, and use web fonts.
• Distribute objects on the Stage.
• Create and edit symbols.
• Understand symbols and instances.
• Apply filters to symbol instances.

Method:

Using the downloaded Adobe Animate CIB instructions that is available in Canvas. I have shared a folder in Google Drive that contains all of the assets needed for these assignments. The student will start of page 42 and complete the Lesson 2: Creating Graphic and Text is pictured above.

Once completed, the student will export the file as an JPEG and post to their blog along with a 4-6 sentence summary of learning.

Animate CC: Getting Acquainted

Objective

The student will learn how to do the following:

Create a new file in Adobe Animate CC.
Understand the different Adobe Animate document types.
Adjust Stage settings and document properties.
Add layers using the Timeline panel.
Understand and manage keyframes in the timeline.
Work with imported images in the Library panel.
Move and reposition objects on the Stage.
Add filters and color effects to keyframes.
Open and work with panels.
Select and use tools in the Tools panel.
Preview your animation.
Save your file.

Method:

Download the Adobe Animate CIB instructions that is available in Canvas. I have shared a folder in Google Drive that contains all of the assets needed for these assignments. The student will start of page 2 and complete the Lesson 1: Getting Acquainted animated GIF that is pictured above.

Once completed, the student will export the file as an Animated GIF and post to their blog along with a 4-6 sentence summary of learning.
